What is an Asthma Action Plan?

An asthma action plan also called an asthma management plan is a customized written plan created by you and your doctor to help control and manage your asthma.

The goal of an asthma action plan is to decrease or prevent asthma attacks and emergency room visits with day-to-day asthma management.

The asthma action plan provides information on the asthma medications you take daily and when to take them to control and prevent asthma attacks. The asthma action plan mentions how to control your asthma for the long-term and how to handle asthmatic episodes or severe asthma attacks. The plan will also help you determine when to see your doctor or go to the urgent care.

The following information is provided on an asthma action plan:

  • how to avoid your asthma triggers
  • detecting early symptoms of an asthma attack and preventing it from getting worse
  • how to manage an asthma attack, episode or flare-up
  • knowing when to seek emergency care
  • An asthma action plan for a child should be discussed with caregivers, teachers and babysitters so that everyone knows how to help manage the child with asthma and know what to do if the child has an asthma attack.
