01/15/2017 Bethesda Office closing early Thursday

What is Immunodeficiency Disorder?

Immunodeficiency disorder prevents the body from fighting infections and diseases normally. People with immunodeficiency disorders are more likely to catch viruses and bacterial infections. Immunodeficiency disorders can be congenital or acquired.

Types of Immunodeficiency Disorders

Primary (Congenital)
  • XLA
  • SCID disorders
  • Alymphocytosis
  • Secondary (Acquired)
  • AIDS
  • viral hepatitis
  • multiple myeloma
  • Symptoms

    The following are common symptoms of an immunodeficiency disorder.

  • frequent and recurrent sinus infections, ear infections, skin infections and pneumonia
  • blood infections
  • digestive problems (cramping, diarrhea, nausea)
  • autoimmune disorders
  • Diagnosis and Treatment

    Immunodeficiency disorders can be diagnosed with the following:

  • physical examination
  • medical history
  • blood tests (T cell count or white blood cell count)
  • antibody test
  • Treatment

    Treatment for immunodeficiency disorders usually includes antibiotics and antibody replacement. Consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
