What is Dermatitis?
Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin (dermis) and it has multiple causes including allergic causes. There are many types of dermatitis including contact dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis and atopic dermatitis (eczema).
Causes of Dermatitis
Dermatitis can be caused by common household or environmental substances or irritants such as:
- detergents
- bleach
- rubber
- metal
- perfumes
- laundry soap
Symptoms of Dermatitis
The following are common symptoms of Dermatitis.
- red scaly itchy rash
- hives
- dry skin
- blisters filled with clear liquid
Diagnosis and Treatment
Dermatitis can be diagnosed by an allergist, dermatologist or medical physician.
The best treatment for dermatitis is avoidance of the irritant or allergen that is causing the skin inflammation. Treatment also depends on the type of dermatitis and what symptoms (mild to severe) are being experienced. Corticosteroids creams and lotions can be prescribed to relieve the itching. For severe cases of dermatitis, seek medical attention.
